90’s Instruments

The samplers:

The sampler is an electronic musical instrument that is capable of acquiring sounds in digital format.

Starting from the first experiments of the Frenchman Pierre Schaeffer, whose references you can find on this page. Samplers were the real revolution in the way of making music in the 90s.
The hardware samplers allowed, even if with very little memory compared to today, to have infinite possibilities for sound processing in a single instrument that went beyond simply reproducing the sounds of different instruments

We can say that each sampler had its own voice, its character which depended on the resolution in terms of bites and on the converters installed on the machine. A piano sample played in a Roland S-50 did not have the same character when recorded on AKAI S950 or on EMU ESI 4000

AKAI was really important in the development of hip hop music with the MPC model. The Akai MPCs were designed by Akai in collaboration with engineer Roger Linn and launched in 1988, just before the start of the 90s. The MPC has a grille with large, pressure-sensitive rubber pads that can be played similar to a keyboard, ideal for playing rhythm loops

The Romplers:

rompler is an electronic musical instrument that plays pre-fabricated sounds based on audio samples

In this case the machines could not sample but already had a vast collection of samples ready for use or in-depth processing.
Who doesn’t remember the Korg M1 piano? and how many songs were made with the same sample? sometimes simplicity and directness are the key.
